Based on the young adult novel written by Veronica Roth, Divergent already has quite the following. When it was announced that this popular novel was going to be made into a movie, fans were overjoyed. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the cast of Divergent sat down at a panel, ready to discuss all the details of the upcoming movie and their roles.

Divergent, in short, is set in a futuristic dystopian Chicago where people are divided into five separate factions that are based on a certain virtue. In the book, when a child turns 16 years-old, they have a choice of either continuing in their assigned faction or moving into a new group. Once making this decision, they must endure a rigorous and competitive process that will seal their fate in their chosen faction. The story follows Beatrice “Tris” Prior (Shailene Woodley) as she decides to switch factions and move into Dauntless, and the journey of her discovering a secret that changes her life.

“The world that Veronica created was just so interesting,” said Zoe Kravitz, who plays Christina, during an interview at San Diego Comic-Con. “Setting it in Chicago in a place that we know; there’s something very eerie about that … This is something that we can see how it’s changed and fallen to nothing. That is very creepy to me.”

While Roth created the book series, Neil Burger helped take words on a page and put them on the big screen. Burger is most well known for his movie Limitless that released in 2011. Although making the step from the bookshelf to the silver screen can be scary, Roth had nothing but positive things to say about how Burger re-designed her world.

“He’s been so careful and so thoughtful, and his vision is so interesting that, I mean I’m in love with it and I’ve only seen little parts of it,” said Roth at San Diego Comic-Con.

However, she couldn’t contain herself when she began talking about the process of filming the movie. Roth said she was emotional after spending so much time with the cast and crew because of all their hard work. She was also impressed with how well Burger stuck to her book and how well it all fit in with what she wrote.

Burger agreed with Roth’s view on the adaptation, and he called the filming experience a “journey.” The adaptation, to Burger, took a lot of studying the novel and figuring out how to take all the characters and events from inside the pages to a movie script. He was very proud of all his cast members, especially Woodley.

“The range of emotions and behaviors that she had to do and go through was incredible,” said Burger. “She goes form this unassuming young woman to a kick ass warrior, with hard work, it didn’t just happen over night … And then she could do the stunt work and the action work amazingly, so we were very lucky, she was the whole package.”

Those in attendance at the Divergent panel got to see a sneak peak of the movie and the first official trailer. Woodley said prior to the panel that she was “very excited about it” and she thought people would respond very well to the clips they were going to show.

“There’s a lot of fight scenes and a lot of close ups of people getting hit in the face and people getting, especially Tris, getting run down over and over and over again,” said Woodley, “and then bringing yourself back up and getting the courage to keep going.”

So as San Diego Comic-Con came to a close, there was a lot for Divergent fans to buzz about. They already know the characters, the events, and the outcomes. They have read the series once, if not twice or three times, and they are anxiously awaiting the release of the movie. Now they have something that may help hold them over until next March when Divergent is released in theaters nationwide.
