When you think of angels, do you picture people wearing all white with halos? Me too. Until now. Just recently, I got hooked on to SyFy’s show Dominion which shows an absolute more badass version of angels.
When we last spoke to the cast and the genius behind the show, Vaun Wilmott, it was during San Diego Comic-Con and we were smack dab in the middle of Season 1. Now, after it’s eight episode season wrapped up in August, I think it’s safe to say we’re all sort of scouring the internet for any kind of clue as to what to expect for Season 2. Well, have no fear!
The Daily Quirk had the opportunity to talk to Wilmott to hear what he had to say to his fans, what can we expect to happen to some of our favorite characters next season and whether or not we’ll finally see beyond the walls of Vega.
The Daily Quirk: Congratulations on Dominion being renewed for a second season.
Vaun Wilmott: Aw, thanks!
TDQ: I know the show had a very strong Twitter presence all through season one and then an exceptionally strong twitter campaign for renewal. What was it like seeing all that fan support?
VM: Oh, my goodness. You know, certainly for me, I’d never experience it before. I wasn’t really a Twitter guy. I opened the account maybe like two years before and I literally didn’t touch it. Then when the show was about to launch, SyFy contacted me and said, ‘Hey, do you wanna get involved with Twitter and do you wanna push the show?’ I really felt like it was just a unique way that is really happening now. I think people are really responding to it and getting into it. So for me, it was just mindblowing. I can remember the first few people. I think I had like one follower and I can remember one of the first fanclubs was a Russian fanclub. Dominion Russia was one of the first followers I had. And then to grow from that, to see more and more people come on and the passion, I feel just so lucky to be involved in that and to see how much the fans enjoy the show and how passionate they are. It’s an unbelievable experience.
TDQ: Would you like to take this as an opportunity to say anything to those fans who support the show so intensely?
VM: I would just say, thank you so much. I think we’re all lucky to get to do this and to be able to create something that gets out there in the world and have people enjoy it and respond to it. I mean, for an artist, I think it’s probably the greatest compliment and also the greatest blessing. Really. Thank you.

TDQ: When we spoke at San Diego Comic-Con, you said you were already planning Season 2. Can you tell us a bit about how that’s going?
VM: It’s going really well. I’ve spent about the last month reading a lot of scripts, looking for writers to fill out the room. A couple of really, really amazing writers have returned from season one. Todd Harthan, who’s an [Executive Producer] on the show in the second season, he’s my rock. He’s an incredible writer. And, Becky Kirsch who, in-between seasons, was on 12 Monkeys. Now she’s come back to us for Season 2. From those two as a starting point, we’ve really built out the room with some incredible writers from a variety of different shows and backgrounds. We’ve been in the room for about three and a half weeks now. We’ve really beat out the second season and filled in the arcs. We know where everybody’s beginning, where they’re ending. We’ve got a really good idea of all of their journeys and now starting last Monday, we started breaking episode one.
TDQ: That sounds so exciting.
VM: Ah, it’s been a blast. It’s been incredible.
TDQ: Season 1 left off with some huge cliffhangers. Will we pick up exactly where we left off?
VM: You know, it’s going to be a time jump. I won’t say exactly how much time has passed but we’re definitely going to launch into the story. We’re going to crash in. I think people are going to be surprised by kind of where everybody is at.
TDQ: The major story arc of Season 1 seemed to be Alex’s journey as a reluctant hero. Can you tell us a bit about what will be driving the story in Season 2?
VM: I think in Season 1, he was very reactionary. You know, it was landed on him. A lot of secrets and things he didn’t know were suddenly revealed to him and the biggest of all is this kind of burden. That was much more than he ever expected and certainly the way he starts the season is a guy who really just wants to get away. Suddenly he’s hemmed in even more than he was before. That guy is very much going to come out of the experience that happens between the seasons, in the time period between Season 1 and Season 2. Much more active. Much more his own man. Much more the rebel who’s going to do what he thinks he needs to do and not so much what people are telling him to do or what he thinks he needs to do from what the tattoos are saying. I think he’s going to be much more active, much more driven and less reactive.
TDQ: How about Michael’s backstory, will we see more flashbacks?
VM: Yeah, I think our show lends itself to flashbacks. Much more so than we did last season. I think we only did maybe… We did a couple of Jeep flashbacks and then we had that great one that was the ancient one with the three Archangels. So, yes. We will definitely dig into Michael’s backstory through flashbacks. Arika’s.. Really, everybody’s. We’re going to get a chance to really see everybody’s point of view and their experience through flashbacks in Season 2.
TDQ: How about hints as to how he chose Alex, will we see some insight into that?
VM: Shows him in terms of?
TDQ: Of how Michael chose him to be the savior? Will we see any of that background?
VM: Yeah. I think we’re going to get out more of what it means to be the chosen one. Not sure if it’ll specifically come through Michael’s backstory but I think we’ll definitely unveil more of that history and what it means and how it’s going to unfold in terms of Alex’s journey.

TDQ: What will be in store for Claire in Season 2?
VM: Claire is an interesting situation because literally all the people that she’s always kind of counted on are gone. Riesen has left the city. Michael has been disgraced and thrown away. Alex [went] to save his child or to protect his child and Claire he left. She’s really left to basically not only grow up but become a leader in a very fast — You know, she has no time. She’s gotta just hit the ground running. At the same time, her biggest obstacle and antagonist is still in the city which is David Whele. I think for her, her journey is going to very much be what does that look like? How is that going to play out? What kind of hard decisions and choices is she going to be faced with? What is she willing to do to take the reigns of the city? Her story is very much going to be involved and very much focused on Vega. We’re going to kind of answer a lot of questions that were asked last season.
TDQ: Speaking of Vega, will we get to see more of the world outside of Vega?
VM: Yeah, that’s actually going to be a big part of Season 2. We’re actually going to get to see other places in the world, in the cradle. That’s super exciting because it’s just an opportunity to do some world building, meet some new characters who can kind of fill in our mythology and be exciting obstacles and conflicts for all of our main characters. We’ve got a lot planned outside the walls of Vega.
TDQ: Anything else you can tease for fans who are eagerly awaiting more Dominion?
VM: I mean really, really look for some epic, interesting new characters [and] epic twist and turns. We’re going to really be revealing a lot of secrets as well as creating a lot more questions. I think it’s going to be a rollercoaster ride. They’re going to see characters that they thought were one way, in a new light. [laughs] It’s going to be fun.
