The Best 5 Moments from The X-Files Miniseries (So Far)

In Season 6 of The X-Files, Mulder tells Scully, “They can’t take away the X-Files, Scully. They tried.” Much the same way, the TV show The X-Files keeps coming back in different forms. After nine years on air, movies in 1998 and 2008, and becoming a cultural phenomenon, Mulder, Scully and The X-Files returned to our TV screens. And I’m happy to report that the show is still as great as ever with our agents searching for the truth and digging up conspiracies. Read on to uncover the miniseries’ best moments so far!

“My name is Fox Mulder.”

The opening of “My Struggle” literally gave me chills. While it was mostly Mulder summing up the series as a whole, this meant The X-Files was actually returning. This was really happening. Plus, all the stills of Mulder and Scully at work proved the show wasn’t going to be all-new but the same X-Files that we know and love, just in a more modern package. The fact that it led almost directly into the show’s original credit sequence didn’t hurt either.

“They’ve reopened the X-Files.”

This moment in “My Struggle” gave me both chills and reasons to cheer. As an X-Files fan, knowing that Mulder and Scully were back on the case was a dream come true, but the Cigarette Smoking Man was the one who delivered the good news. Believed to be dead after the series finale, the villain is back, albeit in worse health than the last time we saw him. It was a great moment for the first episode to end on because I immediately wanted to see more.

“Welcome back, you two.”

In case we thought Skinner had changed in the eight years since we’d last seen him, this scene in “Founder’s Mutation” proved he hadn’t. Not only was he willing to listen to Scully and Mulder’s somewhat outlandish theory, but he also gave them time to get more evidence by hiding their paperwork. A funny and great way to remind us just whose side Skinner is on, this scene showed that Scully and Mulder still aren’t in their quest alone.

“Dr. Scully, I was told that you were the rational one.”

I laughed when Dr. Goldman said this to Scully in “Founder’s Mutation” because it was clearly supposed to be an insult but didn’t work out that way. First of all, Dr. Goldman obviously hasn’t actually watched The X-Files. Yes, Scully is the more rational one, but when all the evidence is saying you’re guilty of using alien DNA in your experiments, Scully’s going to side with that. Plus, she got a lot more open-minded over the years through what she say in the cases. Dr. Goldman’s attempt at side-stepping the question didn’t escape Scully’s notice either, and she and Mulder kept on the scientist’s case.

“Do you ever think about William?”

Hands down the two best scenes in “Founder’s Mutation” were the sequences where both Mulder and Scully thought of what it would be like if they’d gotten a chance to raise William. We got to see the two of them acting as parents with Scully taking William to school and Mulder watching 2001: A Space Odyssey and building rockets with their kid. Of course, as good as the parenting was, I was pretty partial to the scenes when they turned into nightmares. Scully worried William would manifest alien DNA while Mulder saw William get abducted like his sister. The miniseries is supposed to focus on the agents’ regret about giving their son up, and these scenes were a perfect way to introduce that idea.

While there were tons of other great moments in The X-Files miniseries so far, including Scully doing an autopsy again, these five were the ones that encapsulated what I wanted from the revival. I wanted my X-Files back, maybe a little worn and grizzled but still recognizable as the same show. The miniseries has been everything I could have wanted and then some, and there’re still several episodes to go! Let me know what you’ve liked in the comments below. We’ve got to celebrate our show being back on the air while we still can.

The X-Files miniseries continues Mondays at 8 p.m. on Fox.

Beginning to Make Toys Right with #WheresRey

When Star Wars fans headed to stores for memorabilia, many of us couldn’t find the character we were looking for. Like Marvel’s Gamora and Black Widow before her, new heroine Rey had been left out of too many toy sets. Most egregious were a set of action figures that featured male leads Finn, Poe Dameron and Kylo Ren, along with Chewbacca and a generic pilot and Stormtrooper and the Millennium Falcon playset that featured Finn, Chewbacca and BB-8, even though Rey is the one to fly the ship in The Force Awakens.

But in spite of the growing hashtag campaign #WheresRey, the lack of Rey went largely unnoticed by the general public until recently when a tweet, featuring a letter from an 8-year-old who wanted toy manufacturer Hasbro to know “girls matter,” went viral. The letter was in response to Rey’s absence from the company’s Star Wars Monopoly game, where you can play as Finn, Kylo Ren, Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker (the latter two of whom either don’t or barely appear in the new movie).

Finally, Hasbro was forced to address the issue, but their official statement raised more questions than it answered. They told Entertainment Weekly: “The Star Wars: Monopoly game was released in September, months before the movie’s release, and Rey was not included to avoid revealing a key plot line that she takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance.”

Admittedly, spoilers for The Force Awakens were a BIG DEAL in the days leading up to and directly following the film’s December release, and Disney even claims they planned this lack of Rey toys to avoid spoilers. In an interview, Paul Southern, head of licensing for Lucasfilm, said, “The fact that she was the ultimate heroine of the film was one of the significant plot points we did want to protect.” This makes a kind of sense, except apparently, the fact that Finn is also a hero of the movie wasn’t considered too spoiler-y.

As many fans have pointed out, including Rey in her scavenger outfit (which she wears almost all of the movie) shouldn’t have been considered a spoiler. Rey was a key figure in The Force Awakens’s trailer, and it only made sense that she was an important part of the movie. If this was solely related to the fact that Rey ends up with Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber and it awakens the force within her, the lightsaber didn’t have to be included in early-release toys.

Southern admits that the passion for Rey toys – which are selling “exceptionally well” at Target – caught Disney by surprise, saying, “The excitement around her is a lot more than we were expecting it to be.” Admitting there’s a problem is a good first step, and with Disney now releasing more Star Wars toys that feature Rey because The Force Awakens spoilers are less of a problem, it may seem like our worries over the missing Rey were unfounded.

But #WheresRey proved a point that fans have been making for years: we want female characters in our merchandise. If Disney – and by extension, Marvel – can finally see that in profit, the language they speak best, maybe we won’t need any more hashtag campaigns. Although I’ve got a bad feeling about leaving it up to the companies, we have made our voices heard. Disney and Hasbro have commented on this issue, so they have no more excuses.

While we wait to see if anything has been learned, rejoice in the Rey merch (new and old)! I picked out a few things that I need to run out to the store and get ASAP, so take a look at my list or check out Entertainment Weekly’s full rundown to figure out what you want.

Rey’s Speeder – Lego

Released prior to The Force Awakens, this Lego set helps you recreate Rey’s speeder from her time on Jakku. It comes with extra studs for you to shoot – although it’s probably not recommend you do what I would do and shoot them at people – and an adorable Rey Lego figure. Plus, the price isn’t half-bad for a Lego kit.

Bladebuilders: Rey’s Lightsaber – Hasbro

When I was kid (and honestly, also now), the number one thing I wanted was a lightsaber, and this one lights up and makes noises! This toy may just be a dream come true, as long as the price is right.

Itty Bittys: Rey – Hallmark

I already have several of these itty bitty stuffed animals, so I may be a little biased on this one. But take one look at Rey’s super cute face and tell me you don’t want one. Just go ahead and try.

Rey 3.75-inch Action Figure – Hasbro

The new Rey action figure features her in her “Resistance outfit” that she wears at the end of the movie, and it comes with a lightsaber for her to hold. Whether you end up getting this one or the scavenger version released in September, it’s a win for you either way.

Rey and BB-8 Elite Series Die Cast Action Figure – Disney

The latest version of Disney’s Rey action figure has her lightsaber, but it’s extra cool that you get her staff too. Besides, BB-8 comes along too, and how can you not want a tiny, adorable droid?

In all the controversy surrounding #WheresRey, perhaps TIME contributor Darlena Cunha said it best when she wrote:

“Little girls need to see themselves as heroes. Little girls need to see that they can grow up to be powerful and good. Little girls deserve a chance to imagine strength and perseverance in their own gender. They deserve someone to look up to.

Just as important, so do little boys. Little boys need to see that women are strong and fierce, and that women characters are just as magnetic as men characters. And they need confirmation of their inner monologue when they see a movie that shows just that. The merchandise should match that experience.”

Welcome to the world, Rey. Sadly, because of the current lack of diversity in toys, you may be our only hope at changing things around. But with any luck, in the future, you won’t be alone. May the Force be with us all.

‘The Bronze Horseman:’ The Dream Cast We’re Rooting For

‘The Bronze Horseman:’ The Dream Cast We’re Rooting ForThe Bronze Horseman is a novel by Paullina Simons that I devoured around last Christmas. As a History major, I have a really odd soft spot for the Soviets and their history with us. I can’t really explain it, but if you get it, or at least like romance novels, then give this book a chance. It follows the story of Tatiana Metanova and opens on the day Russia declares war on Germany after an invasion. She meets a Russian soldier named Alexander and their story blooms from there. It’s captivating and just an all around amazing story. And this past October, Simons announced that the novel has a confirmed movie deal. And this book has a very special place in my heart and here are just a few people I hope may be included among the cast.

  1. Chloë Grace Moretz as Tatiana

Chloë has gotten very popular lately having been picked as the lead in The Fifth Wave movie adaption. I feel like she’d be a great Tatiana because she’s young and really fits the description of the young Russian girl.

  1. Henry Cavill as Alexander

The Internet has been vying for Henry Cavill to play Alexander so hard and for so long now, I’m honestly scared to suggest anyone else.

  1. Nina Dobrev as Dasha

Dasha is Tatiana’s older sister and I feel like Nina is such a beautiful and great actress that she could convey the sultry and sometimes kind-of-bitchy Dasha very well. There is a chance she’s much too tan to play the part of a Russian girl, but I’m in love with Nina and just want her to be in everything.

  1. Ed Westwick as Dimitri

Dimitri is the friend of Alexander and shows some interest in Tatiana. However, there’s something about him Tatiana doesn’t like. I think Ed Westwick would be able to give Dimitri his untrustworthy air.

These are just a few suggestions of some of the people I’d like to envision playing the roles of some of my favorite characters. I know casting is a hard and difficult process and I think all fans will understand if our top picks don’t get cast. Let’s all just be thankful that such a wonderful novel is getting turned into a movie that we can share and enjoy with everyone.

Meet the Cast of Netflix’s ‘Master of None’

Master of None is a show that Netflix released in November. I was a little late to the party and just binge watched it after reading how amazing the show was, and let me just say, the raving reviews did not prepare me for how hard I fell in love with this show. Season 1 has 10 episodes that follow the story of Dev as he lives his life in New York City as an actor. It focuses on working a job you don’t love, the hardships of relationships, and many other aspects of life we have to deal with and don’t normally get to see portrayed on TV. So if its wonderful reviews can’t convince you to give the show a try, here’s a little more about the cast and the show that might change your mind.

Aziz Ansari as Dev

First we start with the main character of the show, Dev. Dev is awesome. Dev is hilarious and caring but also very, very real. He’s not the best at relationships or compromising and sometimes tries too hard. But for all his faults, Dev is a great character and the show has you rooting for his success. He is an actor, but mainly in commercials. He does land a role in a movie, but that goes awry quickly. Dev is very determined to never play the stereotypical Indian guy role, refusing to do an accent because he does not have one. Most of the show focuses on Dev’s attempts at relationships and even when he does or says something to a girl that makes you cringe, you still want him to be happy by the end of the episode. Overall, an incredible and very likeable main character.

Noël Wells as Rachel

Rachel plays Dev’s main love interest. In the first episode, the show opens with the couple taking a very awkward cab ride to go buy Plan B after the condom break. After they say some uncomfortable goodbyes, we don’t see Rachel again until a few episodes later. The two take an impulsive trip to Tennessee and you get to see how they interact together, sometimes awkwardly, sometimes hilarious and sometimes angry. Towards the end of the season, the couple face a lot of conflict in that they don’t know if they’re right for each other. Dev and Rachel are one of the most realistic couples I have ever seen on TV, honestly.

Lena Waithe as Denise

Denise is one of three really good friends that Dev has throughout the show. She is gay and spends most of her time trying to give Dev girl advice, which occasionally backfires. For example, Dev has the opportunity to sleep with a married woman and Denise advises him to take the chance. After he does sleep with the woman, Denise criticizes Dev asking him why he would do that, confusing the heck out of Dev. Again, another very real and very likeable character.

Eric Wareheim as Arnold

Arnold is another good friend of Dev and provides even more comedy for the show. Watching him interact with anyone is always certain to make you smile. He’s always there to listen to his friend’s problems, even if they don’t listen to his. Arnold isn’t too hugely important, plot wise, but watching him adopt a robot seal is definitely one of the highlights of the show.

Kelvin Yu as Brian

Brian is Dev’s third close friend and like everyone else in the show, is very funny and likeable, but also very sweet. In the second episode, Dev and Brian realize how much their immigrant parents sacrificed for them and Brian comes up with the idea of taking them out to dinner and hearing their stories as a sort of thank you to them. At the dinner, the two learn how harsh life was for their parents which leads to a heartwarming conversation that brings them all a little closer.

With all that said, these are just the main characters of Master of None. There are many other people that help shape the show, but these five characters are who make the show what it is. You see what they see and how they see it and you can’t help but to relate. So please, do yourself a favor and make your week a little brighter by watching this wonderful show.

TV Character Breakups that Broke Us

How often do you get invested in a show and the characters you know belong together? And when they finally get together you cheer and bask in the glow of their new love. And then a couple episodes or seasons later something dramatic happens that breaks up your favorite couple, and all you’re left with a sense of emptiness. Here are just a few examples of TV shows with heartbreaking splits.

  1. Elena and Stefan – The Vampire Diaries

After four seasons of love and confusion, Elena and Stefan finally break up after he confronts her about her feelings for his brother, Damon. Elena spent her summer searching for Stefan after he turned off his humanity, and as a result spent a lot of time with Damon and eventually fell for him. This was a disaster for the people that prefer Stefan’s charm and humor over Damon’s bad attitude and sarcasm.

  1. Rory and Dean – Gilmore Girls

In a very similar situation, Rory and Dean break up at the annual Stars Hollow Dance Marathon when Dean decides he can no longer ignore Rory’s obvious infatuation with the town bad boy, Jess. Rory cries at a bridge but is comforted by Jess when they finally admit their feelings for each other. Some people still haven’t gotten over the fact that Rory gave up Dean’s loyalty and floppy hair.

  1. Jess and Nick – New Girl

After two seasons of building a friendship and realizing they want more, we finally got to see Jess and Nick decide to be together. But just a season later, they break up when they realize all they have in common is their love for each other. Some fans were distraught that this meant one of them would have to move out of the apartment, but the two are still friends that get into crazy situations with their roommates.

  1. Carrie and Big – Sex and the City

These two probably break up more than anyone on television. Fear of commitment is the core issue of this relationship, and we see it time and time again. With each break up, the fans never knew if it would be the last. In the first movie, Big stands up Carrie at their wedding, but they reconcile. In the second movie, Carrie shares a kiss with her ex-boyfriend Aidan and confesses to Big out of guilt. Fans were sure this was the end of Carrie and Big. But he forgives her and demonstrates that their relationship can survive anything.

  1. The Doctor and Rose – Doctor Who

In Doctor Who, we see Rose share adventures and begin to trust the Ninth Doctor, but when he regenerates into the Tenth Doctor, fans began to support their relationship even more. However, in the season 2 finale, the Rose and The Doctor are separated by parallel universes, and viewers got to watch this heart wrenching separation. To make matters worse, we get to see the two say goodbye when The Doctor projects himself into Rose’s universe as a hologram. Rose has a breakdown and admits her love for The Doctor, and when he begins to reply, his projection is cut off, leaving viewers devastated and as heartbroken as Rose.

So there you have it; just a few examples of the heartbreak viewers endure while watching their favorite shows. So next time you’re rewatching them, be sure to remember these devastating splits and keep some tissues and chocolate nearby to comfort yourself and do your best to try to keep your faith in love alive.

Everything I Ever Needed to Know, I Learned from… ‘The X-Files!’

It’s kind of amazing how much The X-Files influenced the television shows that came after it. Introducing us to mythology arcs and shipping, the show was an early staple of geek culture. Now, I may have gotten interested in The X-Files way past its 2002 series finale, but as I found when I binge-watched all 202 episodes (which is a ridiculous feat but one I highly recommend), the show still has a ton to teach us, both television-wise and life-wise. Forget about kindergarten. Everything I’ve ever needed to know, I leaned from The X-Files.

Trust No One… Except Your Friends

Ahh, one of the shows many, many mantras. It may sound like “trust no one” is intended to make you a paranoid recluse, but even Fox Mulder, major supporter of trusting no one, couldn’t trust no one all the time. Mulder trusted Skinner, The Lone Gunmen and most importantly, he trusted Scully. It may indeed be helpful to be relatively skeptical of strangers and people you don’t know well. As the show professes, they don’t always have your best interests at heart. But The X-Files also shows it’s important to have a few people around that you can trust.

Stay Indoors?

While binge-watching, I noticed a ton of the X-Files take place outdoors and in remote locations. What that means is you will never catch me outdoors or far off in the woods. I don’t want to be made into a bug cocoon, murdered by part-tree and part-human creatures or get infected by an icy parasite. Of course, based on The X-Files, I don’t want to go to Atlantic City either, so maybe the best place is indoors. Or it would be, if episodes like “Squeeze” and “Orison” didn’t show you’re not safe there either.

The Power of Belief

The X-Files often insisted that Mulder was the “believer,” but if there’s anything you learn after 202 episodes of the show, it’s that Mulder and Scully were both believers, just in very different ways. Mulder wanted to believe in powers beyond his control, but Scully already believed in them. Only Scully thought the powers should be couched in terms of science or religion.

As cheesy as it may sound, one of the major themes of the show is learning to believe in yourself. When Mulder met Scully, he was just “Spooky Mulder” who hung out in the basement and had weird ideas. While working the X-Files, Scully had to reconcile her sense of self with the new experiences she encountered, but she never lost sight of who she was. Whatever method of belief works for you, The X-Files definitely wants you to believe.

Rooted in Friendship

Obviously, the relationship between Mulder and Scully is one of the most important aspects of The X-Files. What I particularly like about their relationship is that it’s not always – or even often – portrayed ultra-romantically. But the Mulder and Scully relationship is never a lost cause, whether it’s focused on the romance or not, because the two are simply better together. They respect each other even when they don’t agree, and they work together to get more done. Without Scully, Mulder wouldn’t be who he is at the end of the series, and vice versa for Scully. It’s clear that Scully and Mulder care deeply for each other, and they’re a pretty good pair to emulate in either friendship or romance.

The Truth is Out There

Another X-Files catchphrase, “the truth is out there” was meant to represent Mulder’s quest. Whatever the situation, Mulder had a way of moving ahead, and for that reason, I think the quote contains a great deal of hope. In spite of the many, varied setbacks, Mulder never stopped looking, never stopped hoping. He didn’t get bogged down in hopelessness over his current situation. The truth was always out there, and Mulder wanted to find it. I hope I can remember to do the same.

Fight (for) the Future

How many times did The X-Files get shut down over the course of the show? But Mulder and Scully didn’t give up. They pooled their resources and proved their bosses wrong. Not only did they believe, they fought for what they believed in. The subtitle of the first X-Files movie, “fight the future” doesn’t just mean fight against what’s happening but to fight for what you want. Hey, you might just get a revival of your favorite TV show because of it.

A lot of the time when people think about The X-Files, they only think about aliens or romance, but there’s way more to the show than that. The X-Files influenced many people during its nine season run, and soon, it will get a chance to influence even more. It’s hard to say if the show is coming back due to a combination of hope, drive, belief and friendship, but that’s what I’d like to think because those are some of the values that The X-Files instilled in me. I want to believe. Do you?

With the second half of the final season of Mad Men already in full swing, it’s about time we reflect back on our most-loved and most-hated characters of the show. There’s no doubt that much has changed since Season 1. Our beloved Bert Cooper has tragically passed away, along with partner Lane Price who offed himself in his Sterling Cooper & Partners office of all places. Roger and Don, our two remaining partners, have replaced the other half of the SC&P partnership with Pete and (more importantly) Joan! Continue reading

The Best of Celebrity Party Crashers

Jay-Z and Beyonce (Image Credit: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Adidas)

Jay-Z and Beyonce (Image Credit: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Adidas)

Isn’t it a dream to party with one of your favorite celebrities, or is that it just us fantasizing that idea? After hearing Jimmy Fallon’s experience at the Saturday Night Live’s 40th Anniversary after-party with tons of celebrity guests, we couldn’t help but keep wishing to one day rub elbows with Jimmy Fallon.

But, what if one day it does happen to you? What would you do or how would you react if you were going to a party and the last person you’d ever imagine (a celebrity nonetheless) pops up? There are several celebrity party crashers who have been making their rounds lately, so we thought we should give you a list of people who you might see one day.

Maroon 5

If you haven’t seen Maroon 5’s music video to their newest single “Sugar,” stop reading this article and check it out now. A handful of newlyweds get the surprise of their lifetime when the pop rock band decided to crash their wedding reception to perform their song. According to a behind the scenes rep, the husbands knew all about the idea, but still. Come on! Isn’t that the sweetest thing ever?

Bill Murray

Okay. We can’t be the only one noticing Bill Murray’s slow rise to fame all over again. For some reason, people are obsessed with him and they have every right to be! Have you seen how cool he is and how he’s very nonchalant with just about anything? For example, an engaged couple were in the middle of their engagement photo shoot and what does he do? Casually walks into the frame. Why? Because he’s Bill freaking Murray. He’s also known to crash a bachelor party and house parties, too. Plan accordingly and see whether or not Murray is in a town near you next time you host a party!

Beyonce & Jay Z

Pretty much everyone looks up to Queen Bey and Hov (hello, #RelationshipGoals!) Being in their presence alone has people screaming like crazy. So, just imagine how this bride felt when Beyonce & Jay Z entered the local church with no invitation while on vacation.

Conan O’ Brien

We all know Twitter as the number one source of trying to get the attention of one your favorite celebrities, right? Well, someone got to Tweeting throughout the whole day of a couple’s wedding and was actually able to convince the talk show host to attend the reception. (Does this mean if we keep tweeting Hilary Duff, one day she’ll finally grab some froyo with us?!)

Jesse Tyler Ferguson & Eric Stonestreet

When we heard this story told by Jesse Tyler Ferguson on Conan O’Brien’s show, it almost made us wish we were back in college. After doing a quick discussion with a few students of Kansas State University, Stonestreet thought, “Why don’t we just check out my old fraternity house.” Little did they know, they were a little too late to the party, but everyone was thrilled to see the two anyways. Quick! Everyone should check if a celebrity ever graduated from your school!

We have one note to all celebrities: Any event we throw, whether it be a wedding, birthday party, baby shower or what-have-you, we will allow the open door policy AKA please come to our party. Anytime you want. Who is someone you wish will randomly crash YOUR party? Let us know!
